el Camino a Viñales
We got up
early and checked out of the hotel for one night in Viñales. First stop Finca
Marta (Marta Farm) where we drove up to a guy weed whacking…turns out its
Fernando the ecology professor turned farmer! Also another handsome gentleman,
and just so kind, hospitable and passionate about his farm. He named it after
his mother Marta who passed away some years ago. He spent his early career as a
professor of Ecology, and then said, “I have to practice what I preach.” Could
we all take a note from him, right? He used the cow and horse manure for
fertilizer after he captured the methane gases. He had an irrigation system,
honey bee hives, solar panels, mango grove. Everything he put in place was
totally self sustainable…a very new concept in Cuba. Fernando and his wife
Claudia served us lunch (the best food we ate in Cuba) all from their
farm.
After
lunch the bus drivers, Freddy and Oswaldo, drove us to Las Terrazas Parque.
Some of us swam in the river, and maybe that’s why I was a bit itchy when I got
back to the hotel, but that’s neither here nor there. We stopped off for coffee
after the park, and we were all feeling content. The weather was a bit rainy,
and we were all thinking about Hurricane Michael…who made an appearance later
that evening when we checked into Hotel Ermita. Sarah, Krissie, Erica, Kathryn,
Marla and I ate dinner at a restaurant in the center of town. I wanted to swim
in the hotel pool but it had just been treated with chemicals, so the hotel bar
would suffice.
